Austin Junction to Baker City
Nishanth and
I had a comfortable night in the pop-up camper. No sprinklers and mattress much
better than the ground.
We woke up
to steady drizzle. The Accu forcast said rain would stop in an hour. It
probably did somewhere, but not where we were. About 1100 it finally did and we
got on the road. We wore our rain gear more for warmth initially but did not
trust the still lingering clouds. Good thing we had little faith in Accu
forecast because the rain started back within the hour. It was a cold rain and
low hanging clouds obscuring the mountain tops. We stopped to put on extra
layers.
I was
starting to enjoy the climbing because I was warm. Downhill was a chilling
thrill! Once over the two passes the rain finally quit. The partial sunshine
felt much better. One extra layer came off.
We
approached Baker City thru Powder River Canyon. The canyon funneled the wind
into a stiff headwind. Great scenery but
we were mostly hunkered low over the bars trying to cheat the wind.
It was only
about a 50 mile day but nearly every mile tested us. Getting into Baker City we
found some other racers and shared a room for the night. Even a piece of floor
beats out being in the cold.
